“Midlife is a crucial time for taking stock and making changes that can impact the rest of your life. It’s a time to reassess your habits and make healthier choices. As we age, it becomes increasingly important to listen to our bodies and make proactive changes to our lifestyle to ensure long-term health and vitality. Turning 50 is a wake-up call for many. It’s a time when the body starts to show the cumulative effects of years of neglect, but it’s also a perfect opportunity to reverse course and invest in your future health.”

Dr. Frank Lipman
Did you know chronic diseases kill 41m people every year and account for 74% of all deaths globally (WHO). Too many of us, over the age of 50, experience avoidable chronic diseases and life limiting disabilities that curtail the enjoyment of our later years. The science and the research clearly shows that the time to take control and make a difference is in our middle years, from 50 years +.
We also know people are living longer but are we living a better life for longer is the important question we ask ourselves. While life expectancy in many countries is increasing, health span has not always kept pace – people are living longer but not necessarily enjoying those extra years in good health.
Too many of us have observed the quality of life of family members and friends deteriorate in many cases from avoidable chronic diseases and life limiting disabilities. In our 50’s+ we have it within our remit to prevent, delay or offset the onset of such diseases or life limiting conditions and not just live a longer life but life a better life for longer.
When we look at the interrelated dynamics of good health, we learn that it is the holistic approach to our health and wellbeing that will help us live a better life, a more fulfilled life, in fact our best life ever. By holistic we mean care of our medical, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual (life with purpose) health. Again the science clearly shows that it is the interrelated dynamics of strong health that improve our total health and wellbeing.
“Maureen Gaffney Member of our Expert Panel asks us to ‘Consider this. In the twentieth century, the length of time we are living has doubled so we are now living in the era of the 100-year life. If you have already made it to adulthood, and are in reasonably good shape, there is a very good chance that you will live into your nineties and more people will reach 100.
But whether or not you do, you must live and plan as if you will, so getting ready to age wisely and well needs to start in middle-age. Yet, at mid-life, it can be tempting to avoid turning your attention to ageing. You are likely to be busy with work and family. And you are living in a world that associates ageing with relentless decline, vulnerability, isolation and loneliness.
Just as well then most of us feel younger than our chronological age. Treasure that gap because feeling younger than your chronological age is associated with feeling more hopeful and more positive about getting old, you feel more motivated to look after your health, and feel more in control of your life – and all of this increases the probability you will actually live longer. It’s an achievement to live into old age – and like most achievements in your life, it requires a bit of hope, optimism, forethought and planning.”

Maureen Gaffney
“I now consider exercise to be the most potent longevity “drug” in our arsenal, in terms of lifespan and health span. The data are unambiguous: exercise not only delays actual death but also prevents both cognitive and physical decline, better than any other intervention.”
